What to Expect During Your In-Home Euthanasia Visit

At House Call Vet RVA, We understand how difficult this decision is, and we’re here to guide you through every step of the process with care and compassion. Here’s what you can expect during your pet’s in-home euthanasia:

1. Arrival and Introduction: When your veterinarian arrives, they will introduce themselves and take a few moments to ensure you and your pet are as comfortable as possible. The vet may ask you some questions about your pet’s condition, their comfort level, and your wishes for the procedure.

2. Creating a Calm Environment: We want this to be a peaceful time for both you and your pet. The veterinarian will work with you to choose the best space in your home, whether it’s a quiet room or a favorite spot where your pet feels most at ease. We encourage you to have any beloved blankets, toys, or items nearby to comfort your pet.

3. Administering the Sedative: To help your pet feel relaxed, a sedative will be administered. This allows your pet to drift into a calm, peaceful state. You may see them become drowsy and restful, which is entirely normal. This is a good time for you to spend quiet moments with your pet, giving them love and reassurance.

4. The Euthanasia Procedure: After your pet is calm and comfortable, the veterinarian will administer the euthanasia medication. This is typically done through an intravenous injection. The process is very quick and gentle, allowing your pet to pass peacefully in your arms or near you, surrounded by the comfort of home.

5. Aftercare and Support: Once your pet has passed, you will have time to say goodbye. We can offer you options for aftercare, such as cremation or burial, and can guide you through these choices. We will also provide resources for emotional support during this difficult time.

We’re here to support you every step of the way, ensuring this final goodbye is as peaceful and dignified as possible for your pet and for you.
