Low-Stress, In-Home, Integrative Care

At House Call Vet RVA, we understand the importance and value of the Human-Animal bond. Our mission is to preserve and enrich the bond between you and your pet. We understand that as our beloved pets enter their senior years or become sick with a terminal illness, that bond not only needs to be preserved but nourished, supported and understood by a compassionate veterinary team.

My compassion for animals and dedication to improving my patient’s overall well-being provided the foundation for my house call practice. A trip to the vet clinic can be very stressful for both you and your pet! In our younger & older patients (or immunocompromised), there is a higher risk for disease transmission at a vet clinic. Additionally, having a veterinarian come to your house can provide valuable information about your pet’s condition based on their environment and/or natural behaviors (which is easier to see while they are in the comforts of their over the home. A mobile veterinarian can provide many of the same services your local veterinary clinic offers (with some exceptions).

Veterinarian / Owner

In starting House Call Vet RVA in 2019, Dr. Hemsley had worked as an associate veterinarian in general practice and at various emergency clinics. In 2016, Dr. Hemsley became certified in veterinary acupuncture and many of he patients were older and/or had chronic illnesses. More and more clients would politely ask if Dr. Hemsley could come to their house to care for their older pet as getting in the car, the travel itself had become more challenging as distressful for their beloved pet.

It only took a few house calls before Dr. Hemsley was hooked and started planning House Call Vet RVA. The leather bag she brings with her to each visit is a symbol and a reminder of her goals and values for the practice. Like many practitioners in the 1800s and early 1900s, Dr. Hemsley knows that importance of consistency, reliability and providing comprehensive care. It is not uncommon for Dr. Hemsley to check on a patient “after hours”, whether it’s a phone call or going to perform an exam for one of her patients.

Dr. Hemsley also works as a relief veterinarian on her “days off” from House Calls. Over the past few years there has been an increasing need for emergency clinicians. Wanting to help, Dr. Hemsley worked the overnight shifts when her House Call schedule would allow and make sure her clients with hospice pets knew how to get a hold of her (day or night!).

In her spare time, Dr. Hemsley enjoys gardening, painting, spending time with family and friends. She has two dogs, Kevin & Mork, and two cats, Laird & Elmo.

Our Wonderful Staff

Elmo

About Elmo

Elmo, named after her (human) nephew’s favorite Sesame Street character, keeps our team running strong. While she purrfers to stay “behind the scenes”, her pawsitivity & gentle nature boosts our team morale each and every day! In her free time, she loves sitting on her window ledge and watch people walk by & is fascinating by the insect and other critters in the “great outdoors!”

About Laird

Laird is gifted with an outgoing personality. His spunk and charm make him the perfect guy to manage the monthly newsletter: “Laird’s Letters”. As you can imagine, Laird stays very busy.
